Challenge
Indonesia, one of the world’s largest archipelagos, mirrors the global future, a nation balancing sustainability and displacement. It faces a dual crisis: asylum seekers from over 52 nations live in limbo, unable to return home or integrate, while local communities face internal displacement from climate change. This divide fuels mistrust, resource strain, and lost opportunities for collaboration.
Impact
Expected Outcome:
+60% stronger sense of community among refugees and locals
+45% improvement in emotional wellbeing and self-agency
–35% reduction in aid dependency through self-sustaining systems
Impact: Promotes dignity, resilience, and inclusion; aligned with SDGs.

Approach
Guided by biomimicry, the project translates nature’s intelligence into design. Mapping wind and water currents revealed that refugee migration routes follow natural flows, identifying northern Indonesia, home to six high-density refugee areas, as the key intervention site.
Inspired by the jellyfish’s circular, self-sustaining rhythm, the project uses this motion as both metaphor and mechanism. The jellyfish became our mentor, its form influencing a spatial “vortex” that nurtures coexistence, empathy, and regeneration between displaced and host communities.
Architecturally, the design mirrors the jelly’s adaptability: in times of rising water, the structure can convert into a floating shelter, ensuring safety without displacing dignity.
Within this system, cultural exchange, livelihood workshops, and a craft bazaar become everyday acts of collaboration, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where borders dissolve into bonds.
